Paklenica National Park: Hiking Croatia's Most Dramatic Gorges
Paklenica offers some of Croatia's finest hiking — from easy canyon walks to serious mountain routes. One hour from Petrčane, it's one of the best day trips in northern Dalmatia.
If you're staying on the Dalmatian coast and want to escape the beach for a day, Paklenica National Park is the answer. It sits just one hour north of Petrčane — 55 km up the A1 motorway — yet feels like a completely different world: towering limestone walls, ancient forest, cool canyon air, and trails that suit everyone from families to serious mountain hikers.
Two Gorges, One Park
Paklenica cuts into the southwestern face of the Velebit mountain range, a UNESCO biosphere reserve and the longest mountain range in Croatia. The park centres on two gorges:
Velika Paklenica is the main canyon — well-marked, accessible, and genuinely spectacular. Limestone walls rise up to 700 metres on either side, a stream runs along the canyon floor, and mature forest keeps the temperature bearable even in July.
Mala Paklenica, a few kilometres to the south, is wilder and far less visited. Trails are less maintained and route-finding requires experience — not for first-timers or families with children.
Trails for Every Level
- Easy canyon walk (2–3 hours): Follow the valley floor deep into Velika Paklenica. Shaded, relatively flat, suitable for most fitness levels including active 50+ visitors.
- Moderate: Anića Kuk viewpoint (4–5 hours): The most popular half-day hike. A genuine climb, but the panorama from the top stretches across the Adriatic to the Kornati islands. Allow extra time if you want to linger.
- Serious mountain routes: Experienced hikers can push further toward Vaganski vrh (1757 m), the highest peak in southern Velebit. Full-day commitment, proper gear, early start required.
Rock Climbing — World Class
Paklenica is one of Europe's premier sport climbing destinations, with over 400 routes across all grades. For non-climbers it's fascinating to watch — the walls near the canyon entrance are often busy with colourful ropes.
